Last week we asked our twitter fans if they would take back Gustav Moller. 45% of people surprisingly said yes, and 55% of people said no.
Although personally I would take him back the 45% yes vote surprised me for one reason, namely, the online commentary about him while he was at the club was pretty negative. Although I guess as it always the case, the loudest voices don’t represent all the voices – most South fans understandably don’t live chronically online – although thankfully for this publication at least a few do! Anyway, let’s look at the situation and the arguments.
Gustav Moller was a Danish striker signed by South ahead of the 2025 season. He came across from the Danish lower leagues and appears to have been signed as a replacement for Harrison Sawyer. In the end Sawyer’s shoes were too big for the Dane to fill. Moller eventually quit the club less than 10 rounds into the season with only a few starts, a few games off the bench and a couple of goals (including an important one in the 3-3 draw against Victory).
The yes vote. Let’s bring him back. (45%)
Since leaving South has looked toothless up front. With Bonada injured Harding has moved awkwardly into the striker role and has not been effective. With the transfer window not opening until late in the season it would be helpful to have additional attacking stocks and Moller coming off the bench is better than our current alternatives. He wasn’t able to replicate Sawyers role in Esta-ball but would have been more effective in our more possession based game, offered a tall option for crosses and probably needed more time to settle into the Australian conditions. Give him a few weeks and he would have made a difference.
The no vote. Hope he’s happy in Denmark (55%)
He didn’t look fit, barely made a difference and except for a couple of goals is not effective enough to make a difference. Bonada is injured but he will be back, allowing Harding to play in his more natural attacking midfielder role and we have enough attacking options to stay up if they are used correctly. Between Mikkola, Brennan, and Mells we should be able to create enough options to scrape together more wins once the coaching situation settles.
Our pick? Yes we would take him back, if for no other reason than to give us another option.
On a personal note though Moller was a 20 something who wound up playing semi-professionally for a club in terrible form on the other side of the world. I understand why he left and wish him the best. The situation though was a disappointing one, at first for the recruitment decision at the start, and then for the failure to make something more out of it.
