The first half of the season has been a failure, and the team is currently struggling though some of its worst form ever.
Things all started to turn against St Albans in round 3, when it was decided the team would rest its star players ahead of the massive Preston game.
The result? A 3-0 loss to the Saints, a 2-0 loss to the Lions and discontent in the dressing room. It was the beginning of the end for Estaban, but fans would need to wait six weeks for his inevitable departure and another three weeks for his replacement.
In that ‘lost’ time, South changed its play style to a more possession-based game and lost many players along the way to both injury (Brennan, Marshal, Bonada) and discontent (Moller). South now faces the second half of the season desperate for points and lacking strong foundations.
So what does the second half of the season look like? Well, it will need to look like a quick correction.
In the next four weeks South plays 4 of the bottom 6 sides. The team will need to pick up at least 8 points from those games to have a chance of survival this year.
Unless the form of the team quickly improves it will go into the Preston game at Lakeside in embarrassing fashion, knowing it will only face tougher opposition later in the season.
The late transfer window offers little solace. Players will only be able to come in against the top opposition and few quality players would be attracted to a club in the depths of relegation carrying such a reputation burden as South.
It’s going to be tough, but it looks like the next two months will make or break the club.
