After eight rounds of NPL Women’s action South Melbourne find themselves on top of the table and undefeated. South have managed to rack up 5 wins, 3 draws and 25 goals along the way.
In the past month the team is experiencing minor form dip with its recent 1-1 draw home to Spring Hills. The Spring Hills match marked an important milestone for Raquel Deralas, who clocked up her 100th NPL appearance.
More recently the club recorded face Preston away and again recorded a 1-1 draw. The girls managed to come back from behind when a late penalty resulted Mami Ambo scoring to equalise for South.
Otherwise, the team has been dominant with a 5-1 win against second placed Heidelberg and a 7-2 win against Football Victoria’s NTC being the highlights of the season so far.
Nikki Furukawa leads the race for the club’s golden boot with six goals this season and Meisha Westland follows her with five goals.
In the Nike FC Cup the team has also performed strongly with a big win against Eltham taking the girls to a mouthwatering clash against Avondale in the next round.
Avondale are spending big on their women’s football program and have spent their way up the pyramid. The club is 7 wins from 7 games in the VPL and looking to launch itself to NPL level to join its recently successful men’s program.
Women’s Reserves
The Under 20s also find themselves near the top of the table and are in 2nd place after eight rounds, behind Bulleen Lions. The team has scored the most goals in the league with 32 after an 11-0 drubbing of Brunswick Juventus. The team is in hot form with 5 wins from their past 5 games and faced Bulleen in the next round which could shape the Premiership race.
