Preview: Melbourne Knights vs South Melbourne

Who would have thought that this Melbourne Derby would be a bottom of the table clash? The Knights are last and South is above them narrowly by goal difference.

Both teams come into the game with new coaches. South additionally comes in with a raft of injuries. Although a half baked Bonada returned to play last week, Marshall, Brennan and Mikkola are all unlikely.

The squad’s lack of depth was on full display in a toothless performance against Port Melbourne. After conceding twice in the opening 25 minutes South failed pull one back. This leaves the team with just one goal since March in league play, and that was against a 10 man Oakleigh.

Concerningly though is the team’s defencive cover. Marshall out, on top of a panned defensive approach under the new coach saw South concede easily against Port.

The only hope is Knight’s similarly terrible form. After parting ways with Ivan Franjic the Knights appointed John Markovski. Although Markovski came from a terrible looking Port Melbourne outfit, at least he has NPL experience as a coach.

Unlike us though, the Knights faced a high flying Heidelberg last week and managed to scrape a respectable 2-1 loss away from home – showing that they can at least score against top opposition.

What will happen Friday? Who knows? The one thing I can almost be certain about though, is the team that loses this game will finish bottom of the table this year.
