Review: South Melbourne vs Pascoe Vale

Just a short one today. South are through to the next round of the cup after again scraping through against lower league opposition.

Pascoe Vale planted at the bottom of the VPL2 table elected to play essentially a U23s squad and should have been easy picking for South, despite our lowly league position.

South even saw some big names on the field, Mells, Bonada, Jankovic. Lopez was rested for Pithoulas and our poor second keeper nearly had another shocker after conceding early in the second half.

Pascoe Vale took the lead after a scramble in the box and inability for South to clear gave them an unimpeded shot from just inside the box which they converted with Power.

South waited until the 80th to equalise through corner when a looping Jankovic header lobbed the keeper.

Then 4 minutes into injury time, South punished Pascoe Vale on the counter when a long ball from defence bounced over a Paco defender, only to be met by a charging South forward line. Lampard running onto a wide ball hit a shot past the keeper from the edge of the box to give us the win.

The performance was disappointing despite the result, but I’m also not about to ask for anything more. It seems like we got through the game unscathed and avoided extra time ahead of a must win game in the league against Victory.

We now face Dandenong City in the next round of the cup. We are miraculously only 90 minutes away from the national rounds of the Australia Cup.
