Recently announced Matildas coach Joe Montemurro has been in football for over 30 years. The Melbourne born coach cut his teeth at Brunswick Juventus and eventually turned to a more successful career in coaching, including stints at South Melbourne. We’re going to take a moment to reflect on his time at Lakeside.
Montemurro initially spent time as a Youth coach at South between 2003 and 2005 before taking on the senior coaching role at Sunshine Georgies. However he returned to Lakeside in 2009 when he was appointed coach of the under 21s.
2010 also saw him take on the role of assistant coach of the senior men’s team, a role he remained in until 2012. In that 2012 season Montemurro actually took the helm as senior coach for two games, after Peter Tsolakis was required to serve a two match ban.
So there you go – about six years at South, and now coach of the Matildas! Good luck Joe!
