In this new Alumni series we’re taking a look at the people of South Melbourne who have gone onto bigger things. There’s always talk about how influential South was in their NSL glory days in producing coaches, players, and even administrators, however the club is still capable of producing top class talent even while it’s locked in state competition. Wherever South finds itself, the club does its best for its community and its people, many of which move onto bigger things.
We’re starting with Harrison Sawyer. Sawyer is a center forward who joined the club in 2020 after a spell in Asian club football. He played his early football in Queensland before getting a run with Newcastle Jets in the A-League, but his time in the Australian professional was short and for the next few years he bounced around lower league and Asian club football.
In his first stint at the club, Sawyer took time to reach his potential and was sidelined by injury. In his first season he scored three goals in five games, in his second he scored four goals in 14 games and in his third season, 2022, he his his straps scoring 17 goals in 24 games which helped him secure a professional contract in India. Unfortunately for South this meant he would miss the club’s Grand Final, a game the club went onto lose.
Sawyer returned to South in 2024 and once again displayed dominant form. He played 34 games and scored 22 goals, once again helping him to earn a professional contract, this time with A-League club Macarthur. Unfortunately this once again meant South would have to go without their star player for their final season game, and they lost narrowly to Macarthur in the Australia Cup semi-finals.
His career at Macarthur would go onto find more success with 16 games and four goals in his first season with the team.
