A missed opportunity if nothing else. South came into this 6-pointer looking for a win and almost got there where it not for a last minute heartbreaker.
South started well and dominated the first half. Mells gave us the lead at the 22nd and Mikkola scored early in the second half to double our lead.
However, a quick response from St Albans kept some tension in the game and South found themselves on the back foot, absorbing pressure and looking to hold the lead.
Deep into injury time though St Albans, with possession deep in their attack, played the ball around a crowded box. The winger dribbled past a feeble South defender to set up an unlikely equaliser.
On one hand there were encouraging signs. Mells is looking better, we scored two goals against stronger opposition, and we can almost give ourselves a chance against mid-table teams now.
On the other hand this very much felt like two points dropped. In addition to the capitulation against Port Melbourne we might really be hurting about these games at the end of the year.
Four games into the second round of fixtures and we have 7 points – the same as we had after the first four matches of the season. We have much more challenging games coming up, but are be better placed to snatch points?
Next week certainly won’t be easy. A big game against Preston following a tight turnaround from the Cup. It’s gonna be tough.
