Fresh off Mikkola’s last minute heroics in the huge game against Preston we thought we’d take the chance to look at the career of the 25 year old South Melbourne star. Mikkola is a forward who heralds from Queensland.
Mikkola is a passionate player with a sense of flair, most recently exemplified by his outrageous bicycle kick winner against Preston but also seen in his numerous long range goals and even his infamous long throw technique. The latter was often used with great success as a key attacking weapon under former manager Estaban Quintas.
He originally joined South from Lions FC in the NPL Queensland competition ahead of the 2022 season. Mikkola debuted for South in Round 1 of the 2022 season against Heidelberg United at Lakeside Stadium and went onto feature 28 times that season, scoring 7 times and helping South qualify for the Grand Final.
In 2023 Mikkola improved his goal scoring record with 11 goals from 26 matches, helping him to share South’s golden boot award for the season with Ajak Riak.
2024 saw more success for Mikkola, as he helped South to a Dockerty Cup victory and a third consecutive grand final. Mikkola was a key player for South that season, featuring in 36 matches and scoring 6 goals.
In the current 2025 season Mikkola continues to be a frequent name in the starting 11. He has not clocked up over 100 games for Hellas, making him one of the most experienced players in the squad.
Long throws, terrific goals, and silverware have defined Mikkola’s South career so far, here’s to hoping he can contribute to more success in Blue and White long into the future!
