South face Green Gully on Friday in a game that has little meaning to the boys in Blue. With finals and relegation both officially off the agenda the game serves Hellas best as a chance to rest players and try something new.
South’s main goal will be to get through this game without any injuries as the following two games offer a tricky team selection prospect.
Heidelberg in the Dokcerty Cup Final on the 9th (at the moment) and Auckland in the Australia Cup on the 13th poses a three-part challenge for us.
Firstly the need to compete in both of those games prevents us from resting or managing player load across the four days.
Secondly, the short turn around for both games obviously.
Thirdly, the inability for cup tied players to participate meaning we have a shallower pool of players to draw from. I understand this rules Menelaou, Spink, Nagamatsu out of selection.
So what does this mean for the Green Gully game? Well, likely some of our players will be rested or have managed minutes. I expect the cup tied players to feature, and as a squad for Cohadzic to experiment a bit noting two different style of play may be required for the next couple of games.
Against Heidelberg I’d expect a more free flowing game from us, and against Auckland perhaps something more conservative. Let’s wait and see I guess!
For Green Gully though this game is important. Ajax need a win to stay in finals contention and will likely play on the front foot, there may be a few goals in this game!
Gully have been a little inconsistent as of late, registering a draw against St Albans, losing to the Bergers and Altona (top and bottom ey?) and defeating only Victory and Knights. It’s not a very convincing form card to be honest.
Last time we played was the very start of the post-Estaban era and to be honest we were a little hard done by to leave empty handed, losing 1-0 in rainy conditions away.
Playing now at Lakeside with a deeper, and more confident squad, it’s hard not to see us take at least a point from this game and ending Gully’s finals hopes.
