South’s squad for the Australian Championship has been announced! We’ve jumped straight into the list to see who was named and who missed out!

Off the bat, there’s 23 players in the squad and it comprises 2 Goalkeepers, 8 Defenders, 8 Midfielders and 5 Forwards. Pretty standard stuff especially considering how the ‘revolutionary’ 4-3-3 trend of the past decades slowly shift into a 4-4-2 again – but that’s for another time!

Compared to our earlier long list which had 30 players, this official squad list shows that eight of our previously listed players have missed out! Who missed the cut?

• Defender, Archibald
• Defender, Evans
• Midfielder, O’Sullivan
• Midfielder, Durso
• Midfielder, Francou
• Forward, Skapoulas
• Forward, Brennan

Noting that Iwakami and Nagamatsu had already left the club, these additional eight outs aren’t too surprising. O’Sullian, Skapoulas were younger players unlikely to make the squad whilst the other youngster there, Francou is rumoured to have left the club to pursue a college career in the USA. Archibald is also still recovering from a long term injury so no surprises there.

Halfpenny, Durso and Evans were always likely to be in the firing line, especially as they mainly played squad roles and the club made signing in their positions. Brennan in particular will feel hard done by but the consensus from the fan group was that he wasn’t showing his best in the latter part of the season.

There was also a surprise inclusion with the young midfielder Papadimitriou earning himself a spot on the squad list. Papadimitriou only featured a few times later in the season but did make positive contributions on the pitch, here’s to hoping he’s developed rapidly!

So with those moves considered, what does our squad look like? Well without specific roles and based on the limited listing on the website, it might look a little like this – please note I have a lot of gaps in my knowledge of player positions, especially our new signings!
