South have progressed to the Round of 16 of the Australia Cup after defeating Fremantle City in a heart pounding game at Lakeside Stadium.

The visitors were coming into this game at the underdogs, having to fly into Melbourne from Perth and baring only a meagre recent form record. Although Fremantle found themselves in the NPLWA top 4, their recent games had not been convincing and the club had relied on last minute goals against the run of play.

South started the game strong, peppering the goal with chances but eventually needing something magical to take an early lead.

11 minutes in, Cox cut the ball in line with the goal and unleashed a wicked shot from outside the box, beating the Fremantle keeper and giving South a well-deserved lead.

Soon after South doubled their lead at the 20^th minute, when David Yoo tapped the ball in after a dangerous low cross from Painter-Andrews.

However, at the 30^th minute, Jack Charlston bizarrely ran off his line to collect a through ball, only to foul the Fremantle striker in the box and give away a penalty. Freo scored the penalty to take the score to 2-1.

Again, against the run of play as the rain poured down at Lakeside Freo sent in another dangerous ball into the box, where another poor defensive error allowed the Western Australians to score. At half time the score was 2-2 and fans were shocked.

Another shock opened the second half, when Freo sent another long ball at the 50^th minute where the striker was able to collect the ball and chip Charlston, giving Freo the lead. Three chances, three goals, South on the back foot.

Thankfully South managed to finally find some luck and were awarded a penalty when Juach was taken down in the box. Juach scored the penalty to equalise and ultimately sent the game into extra time.

Both teams failed to score in extra time leaving a frustrated South to take penalties for the result. South dominated the match with over 40 shots but the resolute Freo defended well and took their chances to push the match to the brink. Thankfully Charlston was able to redeem himself with an incredible performance in the shootout. He saved three shots from the spot, helping South secure a nail-biting win!
