South travelled to the ACT this week to face off against Canberra Croatia – what a great little trip!
The Thursday night match wasn’t ideal for the away day but a few of the Clarendon Corner made their way down and were very visible on the broadcast.
Off the field the club made the most of trip, parading the Australia Cup at the Canberra Hellenic Club, essentially a mini-casino. The club’s participation also co-incided with the visit from the Evzones. I know some fans feel this is a bit ethnic-kitch but the Greek Presidential Guard is a big deal and I think this is a great thing for the club to be a part of – it’s a rare opportunity other football clubs simply can’t take!
Anyway the game was a pretty straight forward affair. South looked to be in control the whole time, and with the exception of a disallowed goal from Canberra, Hellas secured the 2-0 win seemingly easily – or as the socials were calling it – professionally.
Cocks set up the first goal with a great through ball to Swibel, with the striker finishing a delightful chip over the keeper. A messy set Giannakopoulos goal doubled the lead in the second half.
We got close to seeing a Bul Juach overhead kick but we had to ultimately settle for the 2-0 win. Three points and top of the group! Not bad!
Canberra it should be said play at a beautiful little ground that helped the 1000 or so people there create a good atmosphere – at least on the telly.
Also cool to realise Cocks and Juach were returning home having played football in Canberra earlier in their careers! There you go!
