South Melbourne played their final ever NSL game against Adelaide United. Over 20 years later the two teams would face off again in the Australia Cup.

3,080 fans packed Lakeside to support South, however they were soon disappointed when Goodwin scored an early goal to give Adelaide the lead.

The lead wouldn’t last long though. At the 33rd minute Bul Juach collected the ball just outside the box and launched a rocket into the top corner to equalise.

From there, South took control of the game. At the 68th minute Uchida would give South an unassailable lead and ultimately secure South passage to the next round of the cup!

The result would be one of half a dozen ‘Cupsets’ which had a huge impact on the remaining fixtures. Following the game, South fans packed the South Melbourne Social Club to watch the draw of remaining cup fixtures… the result of which offered South a chance of a dream cup final…
