The Final!

It is a dream final. After over 20 years South Melbourne and Melbourne Victory will face off for the first time in a competitive match, and with silverware on the line no less!

This match already represents the furthest cup run for South Melbourne, whose previous best Australia Cup result was a Semi-Finals appearance. For Victory, this game offers them a chance to win their 3rd Australia Cup.

However, for many fans this game represents more than just a chance to win a trophy. Melbourne Victory’s establishment in 2004 contributed to South Melbourne’s relegation from national competition. As such, a South Melbourne win in the final will also represent a significant moral win for the club.

Despite previous failed attempts to re-enter national competition, the South Melbourne community has remained strong. The club is still relevant, competitive, and now finds itself on the verge of doing something incredible.

After surviving potential liquidation, a full stadium redevelopment, and potential relegations over the past 20 years, South stands today in a position of strength. It holds an Australian Championship title, and is a founding member of the OFC Professional League. Can South now add an Australia Cup to their trophy cabinet?

Let’s go South!
